Caprice Johnson is Eyeing a Bigger Win in Track and Field

Caprice Johnson says Coach Thomas continues to be one of her biggest inspirations.

Caprice Johnson is clear about where she wants to be in the world of track and field ̶ and she’s determined to see it through, regardless of the challenges.

Currently in her first year at Lawrence Technological University, Caprice already envisions herself competing on the professional level and leveraging her passion for the sport into a media career.

“Coach Thomas was the person that made me really develop a love for the sport. Once you have a love for it, it becomes a part of your life.”

Even more, she is already strategically positioning herself to accomplish both goals.

“I’m really working to build my social media platform,” says Caprice. “I’m currently in school for Media Communication, and I’d like to run professionally and compete in the Olympics. Once I really get my name out there and build a brand, I’m going to position myself to do radio broadcasting. I’d really like to do Sports News.”

Caprice’s skills as a runner first started to shine years ago when she was in preschool. “When I was in preschool, I had these boots with a little heel in the back that I always wore, and I would race all the kids down the hall,” she recalls. “When I finally got to middle school, there was a track team, and that was my opportunity to start actually competing, versus just racing kids down the hallway.”

Caprice continued to build on her winning streak at Farmington High School in Michigan, where she competed in the 100m, 200m, 4×100 and 4×200 and graduated as a 2-time varsity letterman. She was also honored as Track Women of the Year her freshman and sophomore year at Farmington. Caprice also ran the 60m,100m, 200m, 400m, 4×100, 4×200 and the 4×400 for Coach Eugene Thomas’ The People’s Choice AAU team.

Caprice began her college track and field career running the 4X4 and the 400, but she’s really drawn to the shorter events. “I like the quicker events, the fast races,” says Caprice. “I like to get out, so I really gravitate to the faster events and that rush of getting out at the beginning of the race.”

The aspiring sports broadcaster credits a lot of her success on the track to Coach Thomas, whom she started training with when she was 13. “I’ve never liked to train, but it’s different with Coach Thomas,” explains Caprice. “He has really taught me the importance of having a great work ethic, to be able push through the hard stuff.”

She added, “Coach Thomas was the person that made me really develop a love for the sport. Once you have a love for it, it becomes a part of your life. Now, I can’t imagine myself not running track. I’m so deep in it, I don’t know what I would do without it.”

Caprice says she finds herself applying a lot of the things she’s learned training with Coach Thomas to life. “He has this way of motivating you when you might doubt yourself,” says Caprice. “He always says, ‘just trust the process and the training,’ and that has really helped me on and off the track.”

Coach Thomas says he is excited to see where Caprice’s passion for the sport takes her in the future.

“Caprice is going to have a lot of success as a collegiate runner, and I can’t wait to see it come to fruition,” says Thomas. “But I’m even more excited about the day when I see her on ESPN reporting on the Olympics.”

For Caprice, the journey is also about enjoying the path to success. “Achieving my goals is important to me, but I don’t want to miss any of the moments along the way” she says.
