Taliah Wickett Readies for Her Next Big Step in Track and Field

Taliah Wickett was always destined to excel in track and field.

Born in Michigan, Taliah practically grew up in the sport, following in the footsteps of her mother, Tiffany Simon, who was an all-state track and field star and college standout. But it wasn’t until Taliah began to embrace her own passion for running, that she began to actually shine on the track.

Taliah ̶ now in her first year of college ̶ started carving out her own lane in track and field when attending Central East High School in Fresno, California. She finished her high school track career at Chandler Park Academy, in Harper Woods, Michigan. Taliah’s personal best times include 11.9 in the 100-meter; 25.0 in the 200-meter; 56.8 in the 400-meter; and 2:23 in the 800-meter.

“I’ve always had a love for running, but I really didn’t take it serious in the beginning,” says Taliah. “The more I ran, the more I started to see myself really excelling in track and taking it even further than I thought I could.”

A standout basketball player in high school as well, Taliah has always liked the personal sense of accomplishment that comes with competing in track and field. “I like that it can be an individual sport,” she notes. “If you don’t excel or you don’t run fast, it’s on you…so you always have to be dialed in, and I like that.”

Taliah credits a lot of her success as a runner to her training with MTE Enterprises founder, Coach Thomas, who trained her mother in track as well. “Coach Thomas has really taught me the importance of being mentally in a race,” explains Taliah, who is also the goddaughter of Thomas. “He’s gotten me to understand that you really need to focus on the mental part of the sport, because the physical part is always gonna be there if you’re an athlete.”

Coach Thomas says he has enjoyed watching Taliah mature as a runner and a person. “Taliah has always been special to me, and I’ve enjoyed watching her grow as an athlete,” says Thomas. “I’m excited to see her take on the next leg of her career in college.”

Part of Taliah’s mental preparation for a race includes listening to R&B artist, J. Cole, and making sure she always looks like a winner before she hits the track, right down to the smallest detail of her hairstyle. “Everyone has a different way of preparing for a race,” says Taliah. “I think it’s just as important to look the part.”

Taliah’s biggest inspiration has been her mother, who has been her anchor on and off the track amid some challenging times.

“Me and my mom have gone through a lot,” says Taliah. “When we lived in California, she was always working to keep a roof over our head and to make sure I was comfortable and had clothes on my back. She would have to drive 3 hours to work 14 hours, then drive all the way back just to make sure we had a place to live. I want to be able to give back to her because she’s done so much for me.”

Taking note of all the growing opportunities for athletes, Taliah’s aspirations to be successful go well beyond winning on the track.

“Acting, modeling, there are so many other business opportunities for athletes,” explains the rising track star. “I don’t want to be one-dimensional. I want to be like Allyson Felix, someone who has been able to turn their love for sports into something bigger.”
